| |
UN General Assembly Resolution 194 (1948)
(Right of Return or Compensation for Palestinians) - Created a Council Commission to help settle disputes following 1948 war. Allows for refugees created in the war to return to their homes and receive compensation for any damages.

| |
UN Security Council Resolution 273 (1949)
Noting that Israel "unreservedly accepts the obligations of the United Nations Charter and undertakes to honor them from the day when it becomes a Member of the United Nations," Israel is admitted to the UN.
|
| |
| |
UN Security Council Resolution 818 (1954)
Recognizes that Israel has yet to implement section 11 of resolution 194 regarding the "repatriation or compensation of refugees."
|
| |
| |
UN Security Council Resolution 1002 (1956)
Calls on Israel to pull its military out of Egyptian territory and behind armistice lines following the Suez Canal Crisis.
|
| |
| |
UN Security Council Resolution 242 (1967)
Passed following Israel's occupation of the Sinai Peninsula, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and the Golan Heights in the Six Day War.
Note: Resolution 242 has inspired more writing than any other. This is due to a subtle difference between the English and the French texts (both official) which refer to withdrawal "from territories occupied" and "des territoires occupés" (from the territories occupied) respectively. The Israeli government would only consider a restrictive interpretation of the English version which would allow them to hold onto certain occupied territories, without taking into account, however, the second preambular clause, emphasizing the inadmissibility of the acquisition of territory by war.

| |
| |
UN Security Council Resolution 338 (1973)
Calls for a cease fire and an end to all military activity. Begins a negotiations process for a lasting peace in the Middle East.
Note: Resolution 338 is important today especially because it calls for the immediate implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 242 with a view to establish peace.
|
| |
| |
UN Security Council Resolution 465 (1980)
Calls on Israel to more fully cooperate with the Commision. Declares any attempts of Israel to alter the Arab occupied territories as illegal. Declares Israeli settlements in the occupied territories a violation of the Geneva Convention.
|
| |
| |
UN Security Council Resolution 681 (1990)
Expresses further concerns of Israeli actions within the occupied territories. Calls upon members of the Geneva Convention to ensure Israel's respect of the Convention.
