Ambassador Walker is the current president of the Middle East Institute after a 34-year career in the U.S. Foreign Service. His last assignment was as assistant secretary for Near East Africa. Previously, he served as ambassador to Israel (1997-1999) and to Egypt (1994-1997). He served at the U.S. mission to the United Nations as deputy permanent representative (1992-1994) and as ambassador to the United Arab Emirates during the Gulf War (1989-1992). He has served in Syria, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Tunisia.
