Dr. Jillian Schwedler is Assistant Professor of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland, and Chair of the Board of Directors of the Middle East Research and Information Project (MERIP), publisher of Middle East Report. She is author of Faith in Moderation: Islamist Parties in Jordan and Yemen (Cambridge 2006) and has three edited volumes to her credit: Toward Civil Society in the Middle East? (1995); Islamist Parties in Jordan (1997); and the award-winning Understanding the Contemporary Middle East, with Deborah J. Gerner (2004). Her articles has appeared in various scholarly journals, and she is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships from foundations such as the National Science Foundation, the Fulbright Scholars Program, the Social Science Research Council, among others.
