James A. Russell is a senior lecturer in the Department of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California, where he is teaching courses on Middle East security affairs, terrorism, and national security strategy. He also performs sponsored research for a variety of U.S. government organizations. His articles have appeared in Cambridge Review of International Affairs, Comparative Strategy, Middle East Policy, Middle East Review of International Affairs, Joint Forces Quarterly, Naval War College Review, the Nonproliferation Review and Contemporary Security Policy. Mr. Russell's edited volume, WMD Proliferation in the Middle East: Directions and Policy Options in the New Century, was published in February 2006. His second book, Critical issues Facing the Middle East: Security, Poltics and Economics, will be published by Palgrav/Macmillan in June 2006. From 1988-2001, Mr. Russell held a variety of positions in the Office of the Assistand Secretary Defense for International Security Affairs, Near East South Asia, Department of Defense. During this period he traveled extensively in the Persian Gulf and Middle East working on U.S. security issues.
