Mr. Placke concentrates on Middle East politics and oil policy with special emphasis on the Persian Gulf region. He served in five embassy posts in Arab capitals and was minister and deputy to the ambassador in Saudi Arabia prior to becoming deputy assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs. Mr. Placke received both the State Department's Meritorious Honor Award and the Presidential Meritorious Service Award before leaving the Foreign Service in 1986.
