Dr. Lawson has taught at the University of North Carolina and Smith College, and was a Fulbright lecturer at the College of Economics in the University of Aleppo, Syria, where he assisted in setting up the country's first program in international studies. He is the author of Why Syria Goes to War (1996). He received his Ph.D. in political science from UCLA.
