Dr. Hostler was the U.S. ambassador to Bahrain, 1989-93. From 1976 to 1977, he was regional vice president, Middle East and Africa, for E-Systems, Incorporated, based in Cairo. Prior to that, he had a two-year assignment as both the deputy assistant secretary for international commerce and the director of the Bureau of International Commerce for the U.S. Department of Commerce. He also served as the director of international operations, Middle East and North Africa, for the McDonnell Douglas Corporation 1963-69. He is the author of a number of books and articles, including The Turks of Central Asia and Turkism and the Soviets. Dr. Hostler received his Ph.D. from Georgetown University and is a retired USAF colonel.
