Professor Esposito is the founding director of the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding and university professor of religion & international affairs of Islamic studies. He has served as president of the Middle East Studies Association of North America and the American Council for the Study of Islamic Societies and as a consultant to the State Dept. He wrote What Everyone Needs to Know About Islam, Unholy War: Terror in the name of Islam, The Islamic Threat: Myth or Reality and other books, and was editor-in-chief of The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World (4 volumes) and The Oxford History of Islam. He has studied Islam and the impact of Islamic movements from North Africa to Southeast Asia.
