Ambassador Countryman served in the American Consulate General in Istanbul and Dhahran, and chief economic secretary at the American embassy in Tripoli. He was also a staff aide to ambassador-at-large Averill Harriman. He has been a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and executive director at the Initiative for Peace and Cooperation in the Middle East. He received his M.A. from the University of Miami.
