Dr. Yaphe is Distinguished Research Fellow in the Institute for National Strategic Studies at the National Defense University, Ft. McNair (Washington), DC. She specializes in Iraq, Iran, and Persian Gulf history, political and security issues. Before joining INSS in 1995, Dr. Yaphe was a senior political analyst in the Office of Near Eastern Analysis, CIA, where she received the Intelligence Medal of Commendation for her work on Iraq. Her recent research has focused on U.S. policy on Iraq, Iran and the Gulf; the effect of the war on Iraq and the region; and strategic implications of a nuclear-armed Iran for the U.S. and the region. Recent publications include a chapter on Iraq in Government and Politics of the Middle East, 5th ed., (November 2006); Reassessing the Implications of a Nuclear-Armed Iran (McNair Paper 69, NDU, October 2005); Turbulent Transition in Iraq: Can It Succeed? (Strategic Forum 208, June 2004); Political Reconstruction in Iraq: a Reality Check, (Carnegie Institute for International Peace, March 2003); “Installing a New Government in Baghdad” in U.S. Policy in Post-Saddam Iraq: Lessons from the British Experience (WINEP 2003); and “America’s War on Iraq: Myths and Opportunities” in Iraq at the Crossroads: State and Society in the Shadow of Regime Change, (IISS September 2002). She also wrote chapters and edited The Middle East in 2015: the Impact of Regional Trends on U.S. Strategic Planning (NDU Press, 2002). Dr. Yaphe has testified before House and Senate Committees on the Middle East as well as the 9/11 Commission and is Frequently interviewed by the press and television media. She received her BA with Honors in History from Moravian College and the Ph.D. in Middle Eastern History from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
