Areas of Expertise Muslim Politics, Turkey
Dr. Olson specializes in research on how the nationalist movements of the Kurds have affected the foreign policies of Middle Eastern countries, espcially Iraq, Syria, Turkey and Iran. He is also currently interested in the foreign policies of Turkey and Iran, and their relations with neighboring countries. Dr. Olson is the author of eight books and 80 research articles. Six of his books have been translated in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Kurdish and French. His most recent books are: Turkey's Relations with Iran, Syria, Israel and Russia, 1991-2000: The Kurdish and Islamist Questions (2001) which was translated into Turkish and French in 2005; Turkey-Iran Relations, 1979-2004: Revolution, Ideology, War, Coups and Geopolitics (2004); translated into Turkish (2005); The Goat and the Butcher: Nationalism and State Formation in Kurdistan-Iran since the Iraqi War (2005); forthcoming in Turkish and Arabic translations in 2007.
