Dr. Laitin has conducted field research on issues of language, religion and nationalism in Somalia, Nigeria, Spain and the former Soviet Union. His latest book is Identity in Formation: the Russian-Speaking Populations in the Near Abroad. Dr. Laitin holds a B.A. from Swarthmore College and a Ph.D. from the University of California.
