Currently, there is no state of Palestine. . .
In these pages, Palestine refers to what is commonly known as the "West Bank" (the West bank of the Jordan River) and the "Gaza Strip." These territories were delegated to the Arab population of this area by the United Nations when it created the state of Israel in 1948. Up to 1948, Great Britain had taken it upon itself to oversee this area's governing and administrative functions. This was known as the Palestine Mandate, as this area was known as Palestine. The Partition of Palestine refers to the United Nations dividing the area of Palestine into 3 separate areas: the Gaza Strip and the West Bank on the one hand and Israel on the other.
Since the partition, conflict has plagued this tiny area of the world. There have been many attempts to resolve these ongoing conflicts, from negotiated peace accords between the Palestinians and the Israelis to the creation of international laws (see United Nations Resolutions below).
